FBR Income Tax Return 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide for Salaried Persons

As September approaches, so does the crucial deadline for filing your annual income tax return. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has set September 30, 2026, as the last date to file returns for the tax year spanning July 2025 to June 2026. Whether you are a government employee, working in the private sector, or a pensioner, filing is mandatory if your annual income exceeds Rs. 600,000.

Why You Must File: The Power of ATL

Beyond being a legal obligation, filing your tax return enters you into the FBR's Active Taxpayer List (ATL). Being on this list saves you a significant amount of money throughout the year. Active taxpayers pay exactly half the withholding tax compared to non-filers on:

  • Buying or registering vehicles.
  • Purchasing or selling property.
  • Cash withdrawals from banks exceeding Rs. 50,000.
  • Dividends and profits on bank deposits.

Checklist: What You Need Before Starting

Gather these documents before logging into the FBR system:

  • Iris Login Details: Your CNIC (User ID) and password.
  • Salary Certificate: Provided by your employer, detailing your gross income and the tax already deducted during the year.
  • Bank Statement: Covering the period from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
  • Utility Bills & Receipts: For claiming adjustments on advance taxes (e.g., internet, mobile phone bills, or vehicle tokens).

Step-by-Step Filing via the Iris Portal

Filing has become much simpler with the FBR's online system. Here is the basic flow:

  1. Log In: Visit the FBR Iris portal and log in with your CNIC.
  2. Start Declaration: Go to the 'Declaration' tab and select the form "114(1) (Return of Income filed voluntarily for complete year)".
  3. Enter Salary Data: Under the 'Employment' section, input your gross salary from your certificate.
  4. Adjust Taxes: Enter the tax your employer has already deducted in the 'Adjustable Tax' section.
  5. The Wealth Statement (Section 116): This scares many, but it is simply a snapshot of what you own. You must list your assets (bank balance, property, car) and personal expenses for the year. Your wealth increase must mathematically match your declared income.

Note: If the math in your Wealth Statement does not balance to zero (Unreconciled Amount = 0), the system will not allow you to submit the return.
